The Supreme Court of India has quashed the criminal proceedings/FIRs against comedian Samay Raina and four other comedians in connection with allegedly insensitive remarks concerning persons with disabilities made in the context of India’s Got Latent. The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana.

🔹 Why did the Supreme Court quash the cases?
The Court took note of the subsequent efforts made by the respondents to make amends and to promote awareness, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
Among the steps noted by the Court was a chess tournament for persons with disabilities held from March 14–16, 2026. The event helped generate public awareness about organisations working for persons with disabilities, including those supporting people affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Donations were also made to organisations working for the community.
The respondents also proposed additional fundraising shows and expressed willingness to involve persons with SMA and provide financial assistance. The Court noted that constructive dialogue had taken place with Cure SMA Foundation of India regarding future awareness programmes.
⚠️ But the Court had earlier imposed ₹3 lakh costs
The relief came after a significant development in July 2026. The Supreme Court had imposed ₹3 lakh each on the comedians after finding non-compliance with earlier undertakings/directions concerning efforts to make amends and promote the cause of persons with disabilities.
The Court has therefore not treated the controversy as insignificant; rather, it considered the subsequent corrective and constructive efforts while deciding to close the criminal proceedings.
⚖️ Larger issue still remains before the Supreme Court
Importantly, the Supreme Court has kept the broader petition pending to consider the need for appropriate guidelines to prevent the humiliation of persons with disabilities.
The Court has sought suggestions from persons with disabilities and the petitioner NGO before issuing directions on the larger issue.
